Checkmate is a game position in chess and other chess-like games in which a player’s king is in check (threatened with capture), and there is no way to avoid the threat.
While painting this piece, I experienced the threat and feeling of captivity, loss, and loneliness – left in the cold with nothing tangible to grasp.
This work allowed me to overcome the ‘game of life’ so to speak – not allowing life to get the best of me while simultaneously growing and developing the intuitive insight to see the larger picture and use it to my advantage.
The figure of the face in the painting is half-veiled with the same color as the background and faces the whimsical figure that resembles its inner being. It portrays a defying moment where clear victory is achieved via Checkmate.
