Recollection of Self

This piece was created in 2007 and represents the struggle I witnessed in so many souls while living in Miami. The composition was difficult to produce because it forced me to reflect on my inner self and my own trials while traversing a world of pain and disassociation raging around me.
This canvas was from my later years in college – a time where I felt that I transformed myself into something much more profound and wiser. The things I would experience and see slowly began to make sense. I was at a stage of life where it was time to reflect not only on my past and the path I had traveled, but I needed to reflect inward as well. Who am I? Who was I?
Jagged edges of broken compact disc pieces cover a portion of the canvas. These broken pieces are intended to provoke the viewer to seek to learn more from the inevitable in life: the shattering, the breaking, the pivotal moment of embracing the question, ‘what are you doing or what are you seeking in life?’
I contend that one must answer themselves fully, honestly, and with sincerity, or one will never achieve the place of pure fulfillment for which they were made.
